Cumbria could create 9,000 green jobs, CAfS report shows

Green industries and investment could create 9,000 jobs over the next 15 years as Cumbria seeks to hit its 2037 net-zero target, according to a new independent report by Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS). The report, entitled The potential for green jobs in Cumbria, calculates that around 9,000 jobs could be created for local people during a 15-year ‘transition period’ towards the county reaching net-zero, and 3,800 jobs in the longer term across sectors including transport, industry, retrofitting, renewable heat, renewable electricity and waste. The Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership, which includes around 70 public, private and third sector organisations, [...]

Calling all EV drivers and enthusiasts!

Anyone who follows the things we like to get up to here at CAfS may remember around about a year ago, we put out an appeal for electric vehicle (EV) owners on this very site. Our request was aimed at anyone who has experience owning an EV to give us a hand in some focus groups all concerned around the oncoming revolution in our personal transport. These focus groups and meetings were going to take place all over the county and even include a spot of lunch. Well, we all saw how that went. 2021 is a fresh year [...]

CAfS helps create new Ashden Award for citizen engagement on climate

The Ashden Awards are nationally acknowledged as THE awards for meaningful climate change activity in the UK. As communication on climate change becomes ever more important, Ashden is launching a new category for citizen engagement. CAfS was delighted to be invited to help the awards team to develop the criteria and assessment for this new category, with Phil Davies taking up the challenge. "If our 20 years of experience in tackling the causes of climate change has shown us anything, it's that different people get involved in climate actions for different reasons and in different ways," Phil said. "We [...]

Support offered amidst ‘bleak winter’ forecast

Many families are facing a difficult winter ahead with increased hardship, a new report shows. Higher energy use resulting from having to stay at home for longer and a huge reduction in income have produced a toxic combination, researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have found. In Cumbria, adding our already problematic leaky housing stock to the equation, the evidence is that the risk will be heightened for vulnerable groups who will have to make a heat or eat choice this winter. This combines to produce a bleak forecast of the next few months for many residents. The report Stuck at home in [...]

Two new EV chargepoints go live in Cumbria

This month marked the completion of two more installations of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints which are now live and fully operational. Just in time for Cumbria to drop down into Tier 2 as well. Don’t ever say we don’t time things well. The first is our collaboration with Dalston Parish council for a chargepoint and lighting installation in the Kingsway car park near the village centre. The site consists of two charging sockets along with a lamppost to make sure that night-time travellers can find it quickly and easily. Not bad for partnership in which no money changed hands. [...]

Events shed light on funding for home improvements

Two online events by CAfS are offering households and landlords the chance to find out about support available for home improvements, including the government’s new Green Homes Grant. The free sessions will shed light on some of the main schemes that households can take advantage of now, to make their homes warmer and use less energy. “This is a really good time to get on with improvements to save energy and reduce carbon emissions, given the support that’s out there right now,” said Andrew Northcott, energy services manager at CAfS. “But it’s not always easy for people to work [...]

Education leads the charge in South Cumbria

A sunny Monday morning saw the latest electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint installation from Charge My Street resplendent in a delicately adorned red ribbon. This wasn't to last long though as the ribbon was promptly cut by staff from Kendal College to announce the chargepoints official opening for public use. On site were two Nissan Leafs and a Renault Zoe whose owners were eager to get in on the first kilowatts of juice from the sockets. The two new chargepoints are located in the college’s small car park off Vicarage Drive and represent the latest step forward in our partnership [...]
