With CAfS’ support, the group developed two renewable energy schemes: a 30kW hydro scheme at Killington reservoir (between Kendal and Sedbergh), and a 30kW solar PV system on the roof of the Lake District National Park Authority headquarters in Kendal. The electricity generated is sold and the income used to pay back members’ investments. Any profits are fed back into local projects which benefit the environment and community.
“CAfS helped us raise over £300,000 to install the first community owned hydro scheme in Cumbria as well as a solar system on the National Park HQ. Not only does the scheme generate clean renewable energy, but it also puts profits straight back into local environmental projects through our community benefit fund.”

How your gift helps
CAfS’ Low Carbon Communities team supports community groups like CEC to realise their renewable energy projects. We offer free advice calls from a renewable energy specialist, plus more in-depth specialist consultancy support for initial project development. This includes technology assessments; support to engage with the community and landowners; and consideration of different delivery and financing models. Your gift will help communities in Cumbria become energy independent, save money and move away from fossil fuels.
Your donation supports our work towards a zero carbon Cumbria. The case study outlined in this gift card is an example of the type of project your donation will support, but we will direct your gift to where it is most needed. Rest assured that all of the money you donate will be used to support climate action in Cumbria.
