Tackling the multiple environmental crises requires urgent action across all sectors. Trees are a vital contributor to effective land use solutions - as nature's very own carbon capture and storage machines, they remove harmful carbon dioxide emissions from the air, lock carbon in trees and soil, and release oxygen back into the atmosphere.
There can be huge benefits from developing a realistic long-term vision for tree cover in landscapes across Cumbria. These include numerous economic, environmental, and social advantages from planting trees, and from on-going responsible management and protection of existing woodlands.
Planting 'the right tree in the right place' offers solutions ranging from helping to prevent floods and erosion, to creating vital shelterbelts for different forms of agriculture, linking natural areas to encourage wildife dispersal and nature recovery, and improving air quality.
Equally these opportunities are inevitably balanced with other competing pressures and demands on land use, including existing priorities for food production, housing, business, energy generation, tourism and leisure activities.
During this webinar we'll hear about practical tree-based initiatives here in Cumbria, and explore opportunities to expand these approaches as part of Cumbria's wider environmental responses to the climate crisis.
Our contributors will include Cumbria Woodlands, the NFU, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme, Copeland Borough Council, and West Cumbria Rivers Trust.
There’ll also be opportunities for questions and discussion.
This event is part of the Climate Solutions for Cumbrian Landscapes programme
This webinar on trees supports work by the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership on land use. It's the first of a forthcoming events programme focused on environmental challenges and solutions across different types of Cumbrian landscapes.
Our next event will be focused on Peatlands (17th January).
We will then focus on Rivers (8th February) and Hedgerows (14th March).
