Climate Solutions for Cumbrian Landscapes: Rivers

Water water everywhere… for many, of course Cumbria’s image has long been synonymous with lakes and with rain!

However the direct impacts of a changing climate are already being experienced through our rivers and water resources. Cumbrian homes and businesses have been devastated by recent major flood events, even destroying critical infrastructure such as bridges and roads.

Climate forecasting predicts more extreme weather patterns, leading to increasing frequency and severity of both flooding and droughts in the north of England.

However rivers also form a vital part of climate solutions. Restoring rivers and surrounding habitats can actively reduce harmful emissions and increase carbon uptake. Improving water quality aids nature recovery, and reduces the energy needed to treat water for humans.

As we adapt to more extreme Cumbrian weather, slowing the flow of river water can also allow the landscape to absorb the worst impacts of rainfall.

Our contributors today will include the Eden Rivers TrustWest Cumbria Rivers Trust, National Trust, and Sustainability and Energy Network in Staveley (SENS).

There’ll also be opportunities for questions and discussion.

This events is part of the Climate Solutions for Cumbrian Landscapes programme

This webinar on rivers supports work by the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership on land use. It's part of an on-going events programme focused on environmental challenges and solutions across different types of Cumbrian landscapes.

Our next event will be focused on Hedgerows (14th March).
