Funded Sustainability Research with Lancaster University

About the programme

We understand the challenges businesses face in finding the time and expertise to explore in more depth specific areas relating to sustainability.

The W&F Green Enterprise Hub is partnering with Lancaster University to offer 5 businesses or social enterprises the opportunity to collaborate with students on short-term projects focused on sustainability. The projects will be designed around a key question relating to the individual business’ requirements.

Deadline for applications: 5pm, Monday 13th May 2024

This programme is suitable for small and medium-sized businesses and enterprises who would like a new perspective or insight into a challenge they face. You should have a specific area you would like to focus on.

If your business lacks the time, expertise, or resources to explore sustainability initiatives internally, partnering with students will provide additional support without straining your budget. The projects will typically last around two weeks (more time can be allocated if necessary) and will provide important desk-based research that could support future decision making and provide you with quick, actionable insights without long-term commitments.

Successful applicants will each receive 75+ hours (approximately two weeks, but this can be extended if necessary) of student research time, which will be funded by the W&F Green Enterprise Hub.

  • Each project will be custom-designed to target a specific question relating to the needs and goals of your business. Every business will be different; the projects might include: how to best optimise waste management; enhancing your supply chain sustainability; or developing new eco-friendly products. The project will provide valuable research, analysis, and recommendations to guide future decision making and strategy.
  • We expect the projects to be primarily desk-based, meaning students will conduct research remotely and deliver recommendations at the project’s conclusion. It’s a convenient and efficient way for businesses to access valuable expertise without extensive time commitments.

If projects require travel or expenses these must be agreed with the student in advance and must be paid for by the business/enterprise.

Projects will be delivered over the summer (June to September 2024), but timings can be flexible within this period.

At the end of the project, each student will deliver a comprehensive report or presentation outlining their findings and recommendations. This will help you gain actionable insights to drive your sustainability initiatives forward.
