We’re proud to be a partner in the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme.
Fellfoot Forward is a major four-year programme to conserve, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of eastern Cumbria.
Led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it has been developed with local communities and organisations. The work will forge creative connections between people and landscape, conserve habitats and key species and celebrate this beautiful area with its communities.
This distinctive working landscape stretches from the Cumbrian fellside of the North Pennines AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark, to the River Eden and runs north from Melmerby to Hallbankgate. Find out more about the project overall on the North Pennines AONB website >

Sustainability as a golden thread through the programme
We’re sharing our expertise to make sure the project has sustainability at its heart, threaded through all the activities that will take place over the four years of the programme.
We’ll be advising partners on ways to deliver activities in a sustainable way, from reducing waste and travel emissions to using recycled goods, to give just a few examples.
We’ll also help to ensure that the challenges of climate change and how people can be engaged in tackling them are incorporated into the programme, and we’ll help to reduce carbon emissions through the heritage aspects of the programme.
Community buildings
During the earlier development phase of the Fellfoot Forward programme, we carried out audits at five community-owned buildings between Melmerby and Castle Carrock. We’re excited to be able to continue to support the custodians of community buildings over coming years of the programme. Our first step will be to identify the help they need and then plan the support we can offer. It could be, for example, training in the heritage skills needed to maintain and conserve these valuable community buildings.
