Almost every aspect of life contributes to climate change. We'd be spreading ourselves a bit thin if we tried to tackle them all!

We will focus on some main priorities and ways of working for our five-year strategy from 2019.

You can read about them below. It doesn’t mean we won’t do other things, but these are the areas we want to actively drive forward and on which we can have the most impact.

Whole-place approach

We want to work with specific communities to reduce their carbon footprint across all aspects of life in their area, from energy efficiency in their homes to food growing, transport and community energy. Our Alston Moor Greenprint project is a good example.

Cumbria Green Build Festival

This is our flagship programme of events to empower people to make their homes more energy efficient or build new low-energy homes.

Domestic energy

We will continue our practical support for Cumbrians to save energy at home and use greener forms of energy, from draughtproofing services to advice on renewables for generating power and heat.

Community-led sustainability & community energy

We want to support communities to reduce their area’s carbon footprint, helping with practical projects and community energy schemes.

Driving behaviour change

We want to offer more opportunities for people to learn about climate change and how it’s relevant to them, empowering and motivating them to make real changes in their own lives.

Public buildings

We want to share our expertise and support to make public buildings more energy efficient.

Food

We want to support sustainable food growing in Cumbria.

Adaptation & resilience to climate impacts

We want to help Cumbria prepare for the impacts of climate change, while engaging people in actions to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. We will pro-actively work to ensure that any adaptation projects in Cumbria include elements of emission reduction.
