The government has announced a new scheme to help people improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Under the 'Green Homes Grants', announced on 8 July 2020, households will be able to claim up to £5,000 towards the cost of measures such as insulation (or up to £10,000 for those on the lowest incomes). Heating buildings accounts for about a fifth of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, which are the main cause climate change. It's clear we have to reduce this if we're going to tackle the climate crisis, which is why CAfS has a long history of supporting people to retrofit older buildings and build low-energy new homes, along with our draughtproofing and energy advice services like Cold to Cosy Homes Cumbria. For many people, the cost of energy-efficiency improvements is a real barrier, so we welcome this new scheme but it must be part of a much larger programme. We advise anyone thinking of using the grant scheme to seek expert advice before commissioning work such as insulation, to ensure they make the right choice for their type of property.
