Farm Tour of Dalefoot Composts

Show large map

Join us down at the farm on this great opportunity to see behind the scenes at Dalefoot Composts.

Our visit to Dalefoot Composts will include a farm tour, an explanation of Dalefoot’s peat-free initiatives and sustainable ethos, and a chance to learn about their effort to offset operations against peatland restoration work.

Ever-increasing bracken cover is taking over our beautiful Cumbrian landscape in many areas, becoming both an ecological and economic problem. For hill farmers it acts as an obstacle to gathering flocks and reduces grazing, as well as causing other native vegetation to fail.

Dalefoot Composts have adopted a more sustainable solution, harvesting bracken in a managed way as it used to be many years ago here in the Lake District. Bracken was traditionally used as an animal winter bedding material, which was then spread on the land in spring to fertilise the fields. It provided a rich source of humus with a wide range of trace elements, ensuring that the meadows and pastures got off to a good growing season.

Using old gardening recipes, Dalefoot have worked to develop a new range of wholesome composts, which are farm-made on their traditional hill farm in the small valley of Heltondale in the Lake District National Park.

Visitors will be able to see and feel the different types of compost, and experts will also be on hand to help answer questions and offer gardening advice, including recommending suitable products for certain plants & flowers.

At the end of the farm tour you will also be most welcome to purchase compost on site, sold at the special ‘Farm Gate’ price.
