Take a dvantage of a rare chance to explore this three-be droom home with integral workshop\, being built wi th a timber frame and using straw bales for insula tion.
\n \nThe owners are first-time self- builders\, one of whom discovered straw building m ore than 16 years ago and has wanted to build a ho me in this way ever since. They’ve gained hands-on experience at other straw-bale builds in Cumbria and beyond\, including the National Trust’s Footpr int building near Windermere\, a pig barn at Batte ry Farm\, Nenthead\, and a writers’ retreat near I nverness.
\n \nThe owners did a lot of the work to prepare the site and build the retaining w alls themselves\, and have engaged a building cont ractor and architect to construct their new home. Their sloped plot added some extra challenge. Inte restingly\, they had originally hoped to use car t yres for their foundations but their architect adv ised against this.
\n \nThe builders have n ow finished on site and the owners are continuing with finishing-off tasks\, from hanging doors to m aking stairs to the mezzanine level. By the time o f our visit\, the owners hope to be close to movin g in\, so they’ll be able to share the full story of the build.
\n \nHere are a few of the f eatures you’ll be able to find out about – as well as the straw bales\, of course!
\n \nAi
rtightness: The owners are aiming for a h
igh level of airtightness\, to reduce the amount o
f heating needed – and therefore the amount of ene
rgy that will be used.
\n There are two memb
ranes under the floor\, with eight inches of insul
ation between them. There are two membranes in the
roof and others around the windows to avoid therm
al bridging. Every possible access for cold air ha
s been thought about. There are three layers of li
me plaster inside and outside\, with three coats o
f lime wash outside. The home will use a ventilati
on system similar to those found in Passivhaus bui
ldings.
Rainwater harvesting: The harv ester provides water for toilets\, the washing mac hine and the garden.
\n \nThere’s growing i nterest in straw bale building in Cumbria\, with a few popping up around the county in the past few years. It’s an attractive option if you're keen to use materials with a low carbon footprint\, as we ll as creating a well-insulated building that will use less energy to heat.
\n \nThere are just 20 places available\, across two time slots: 1.30 pm and 3.30pm.
\n \nPlease note: this booking is for the 1.30pm slot.
\ n \nBo ok for the 3.30pm slot instead
\n \nUnder 18s: You’ll need to book a place for everyone in your party\, regardless of age. Unfortunately\, we won’t be abl e to allow anyone to join the visit on the day wit hout a ticket (including children)\, for safety an d insurance reasons as well as event capacity.

DESCRIPTION:Visit a straw bale home with clever technologies\n \n \n What do you get if you cross modern-day Pas sivhaus technologies with traditional straw bale b uilding methods? You get Huffnpuff – a new home be ing built near Brampton.\n \n \n \n Take advantage of a rare chance to explore this three-bedroom ho me with integral workshop\, being built with a tim ber frame and using straw bales for insulation. \n \n \n \n The owners are first-time self-builders\ , one of whom discovered straw building more than 16 years ago and has wanted to build a home in thi s way ever since. Their slop ed plot added some extra challenge. It heats the water on days when there is enough s unlight to produce energy. Interestingly\, this do esn’t have to be full sunlight – a bright day is e nough. There is the option to add batteries\, but this has proved to be too expensive for now.\n \n \n \n Airtightness: The owners are aiming for a hi gh level of airtightness\, to reduce the amount of heating needed – and therefore the amount of ener gy that will be used. \n \n There are two membrane s under the floor\, with eight inches of insulatio n between them.
