When a
group of residents of the Ashley Vale area of Bris
tol were concerned about the prospect of commercia
l development of a site at the heart of their comm
unity\, they decided to take action.
\n \n A
fter they formed a cooperative to purchase and red
evelop the land themselves\, the award-winning Ash
ley Vale self-build project was born. The site is
now a hub of community activity incorporating hous
ing\, business and leisure spaces with the value o
f sustainability at its heart.
\n \n CAfS is
running a free talk by Anna Hope\, one of the spe
arheads of the Ashley Vale Action Group\, who now
directs Ecomotive - an organisation that is leadin
g the way in sustainable\, affordable and communit
y-led housing.
\n \n Anna will be sharing th
e story of how the project came to be and what les
sons we can learn from its successes for our own s
elf-driven projects.

er 18 years' experience in self-build housing\, wh
o continues to research the implementation of new
models of housing.\n \n Cost - This workshop is offered free\, as part of th
e Communi
ty Led Housing Hub Cumbria and Lancaster. The Hub provides support and access to techni
cal expertise for groups makeing new\, affordable
homes for their communities.

enue & timings - This event begins with a
light lunch at 12.30pm. The talk begins at 1pm. T
he venue is the Tapestry Museum at the Friends Mee
ting House. There will also be an advice surgery i
n the morning (see below for details). You're welc
ome to come for one or both of these sessions. You
'll need to book separately for the advice session
(see below).

r parking space at the venue except for pre-arrang
ed disabled parking spaces. These must be booked b

an opportunity to get one-to-one advice from a ra
nge of experts\, at an advice surgery before the t
alk.
\n \n The surgery\, run by Cumbria ACT\
, is for active groups with technical queries on c
ommunity-led housing. Your group will be able to s
peak to legal and other professional advisers.
\n \n The session includes presentations and sl
ots (20 mins) to get some great early advice on wo
rking with partners and the significance of your g
overnance choices.
\n \n For this event\, pa
rticipants should book as a group. There is room f
or 9 groups over the course of the morning and the
maximum group size is 3 people.
