This two-part course is especially for tradespeople involved in renovating existing buildings, and householders with the same technical knowledge as a tradesperson.

It’s a chance to update your existing knowledge and learn about building techniques and materials used to make properties more energy efficient and resilient to extreme weather like flooding.

The course is CPD accredited.

What the course covers

This course will refresh and add to your knowledge on refurbishing and improving existing buildings, to make them more sustainable, weather resilient, and energy efficient. 

It covers domestic and non-domestic buildings, with more detail on traditionally-built homes (e.g. solid-wall houses built before 1920).

The course will help you make decisions about materials to use for different types of properties, depending on the way they were built and their location.

It’s particularly important to choose the right types of insulation, render and pointing, for example, so that your customers can enjoy warm, damp-free homes.

Course topics

• An introduction to retrofitting existing buildings – why it’s necessary and things you should consider when you’re looking at options for improving the energy performance
• Current legislation and enticements (e.g. building regs, government incentives)
• Ways to assess the energy performance of a building, and the limitations of the different methods
• Recent research and improvements in our understanding of the way that traditional buildings perform
• How heat is lost in buildings
• Types of insulation and how to apply them on different types of buildings, depending on how they’re constructed
• The difference between modern and traditional construction
• Flood resilience – things to consider if a building is at risk of flooding

You’ll hear about real-life examples of buildings that have been renovated for energy efficiency here in Cumbria. You’ll come away with lots of practical guidance and information about where to get help from other professionals, including energy audits of a building to guide the works you do.

Course level

This course is taught at a similar level to A level (known as Level 3).

Date

This course consists of two evening sessions, on 29 April and 7 May, from 6pm to 9pm. You should attend both sessions.

The course is priced at just £30, thanks to support from South Lakeland District Council and Kendal College. This subsidised price includes both evening sessions.

James Innerdale, from Crosby Granger Architects. James is a highly experienced architect specialising in the repair, conservation and adaptation of buildings.
