Reducing the carbon output of your business

It has become increasingly clear in recent years that to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change, we need to transform the way we live and operate. Building on the innovation that has already taken place so rapidly in response to the pandemic, we need to embrace change to achieve the huge reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that is needed.

This free event is aimed as businesses who are committed to playing their part, but are seeking inspiration, guidance and support to know how to achieve this step change.

Businesses are a key part of the effort to build back better as we move forward in our efforts to tackle the climate emergency. The ways in which we trade with and support each other will be a key area in decarbonising and creating a more sustainable future in which business practise can continue.

This event is a webinar with business insiders on what measures are available for traders in Cumbria to employ and the best way to go about it. It is perfect for anyone in business who wants to play their part in the fight against climate change but doesn't know how to make it effective and commercially viable.

We will be joined by:

  • Tim Maiden from Green Small Business, who will be offering advice on how businesses can approach their carbon reduction efforts in a structured and systematic way to maximise impact. He will also outline the support available to businesses in South Lakeland in this regard.

  • Molly Hogg from CAfS, who will provide some inspiration through examples of a variety of businesses who have adopted sustainable and innovative business models and who have embraced the principles of a circular economy.

  • Nick Lancaster, former Managing Director of  Langdale Leisure, who will provide a business perspective on how to innovate and make the transition to sustainability. Langdale includes a hotel, a spa and leisure centre, a restaurant, a pub, 100 self-catering properties and a 'live in' community of staff and so he has a broad knowledge of specific carbon reduction measures. He will outline actions taken by the business over the past 15 years and, crucially, will explain the thinking, planning and risk taking required and how they overcame hurdles and challenges along the way. He will also outline the business benefits that the investment has brought.

  • Mike Siddall from the Eco Innovation Team at the University of Cumbria, who will explain the research support that they can provide to businesses who want to innovate, and will provide examples of businesses who have already benefited from it; and

  • Sarah Smith from the Lake District Foundation, who will outline the funding available to businesses within the LDNPA to invest in carbon reduction initiatives.
