A permanent citizens’ assembly for Cumbria? What might we learn from European experiences

A chance to hear practical reflections from two European politicians who have been at the centre of piloting permanent citizens' assemblies

Cumbria’s Climate Assembly has recommended piloting a permanent citizens’ assembly on climate and nature (Recommendation 9).  This session is a chance to hear practical reflections from two European politicians who have been at the centre of piloting permanent citizens' assemblies. Sharing their reflections will be Alain Maron who has the cabinet role of Minister of Environment & Climate for the Brussels region and the founder of the permanent Climate Assembly and Liesa Scholzen an elected member in Ostbelgien, site of the world’s first permanent citizens assembly (East Belgium). The event is open to anyone interested in further exploring if this could work in Cumbria and will consist of presentations followed by a question and answer discussion.

This event is organised by Shared Future the facilitators of the Cumbria Climate Assembly with support from Futureproof Cumbria. Shared Future is supporting Cumbria Climate Assembly members—ordinary Cumbrians selected to reflect the region’s diversity—who continue to advocate for the Assembly's recommendations and engage with stakeholders across Cumbria.
