National online launch: Cumbria Climate Assembly – putting people at the heart of climate action

There is much talk about the need for people to be at the centre of our response to climate change, and for a people-centred vision.  But what does this look like in practice?

This is exactly what the National Lottery-funded Cumbria Climate Assembly set out to explore.  42 randomly selected Cumbrian residents came together to answer the question:

Many people in Cumbria feel unheard and unable to influence those who make decisions on climate change action. What can be done about this?”

In response, assembly members produced a carefully considered set of recommendations for action, and, for the first time, a set of principles for engaging with the public on climate--related issues. These provide a practical framework for local government, NGOs, and public institutions like the NHS and the Environment Agency as well as businesses and academia.

At this national launch event we are proud to welcome Britain’s most trusted cook and champion of listening to everyday voices Delia Smith, who will be in conversation with some of the assembly members. Delia said “The assembly members worked hard to answer a vital question: how do we make sure local people aren’t shut out of decisions about climate and our future? I can’t wait to hear their answers. Please join me.”.

During the launch we will hear insights into the process, the principles and the recommendations produced by the Assembly.
