We are inviting you behind the scenes of our #ReadyForRain house, as featured in video diaries, to see the renovations for yourself. 33a Chapel Street is a traditional, solid-wall sandstone terraced property, being transformed from a damp, cold building to a flood-resilient and energy-efficient home.
You’ll find out about lime and other materials and techniques that are perfect for making older properties warmer and more weather resilient.
Making an older house warm and comfortable is different to dealing with a modern, cavity-wall building, whether it’s at risk of extreme weather like flooding or not. A high proportion of Cumbrians live in solid-wall, stone buildings that can be hard to heat and suffer from damp. Often, it’s because materials have been used in them that just don’t work well with these traditionally-built homes.
Our meeting point is at the Appleby Hub, opposite the house. You’ll meet the people involved, and find out about the types of materials and building methods used.
We’ll then break off into small groups for timed tours at the house, led by the owner and contractor Chris Morphet from Lake District Lime (and his site manager, Nettle the dog!)
There are four timed tours, which must be booked in advance as places are limited. This booking is for the 11am tour. If you’d prefer to book for one of the other time slots, please choose below.

If you don’t want to go on a tour of the property, you can drop in at the Hub any time from 11am to 3pm to find out more about the project. No need to book if you’re just calling at the Hub.
We’re proud to link in with the Appleby Heritage Open Weekend for this event, which runs on 21 & 22 September 2019, part of the national Heritage Opens Days programme. [Link to https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/about ]
