Young people capitalise on COP26 to raise climate concerns

Young people in Cumbria have seized on the momentum generated by the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow to present their environmental concerns to leading figures within the county. Electric Battle Bus rolls into Burneside

The good people at Burneside Community Energy (BCE) hosted the only Cumbrian stop on a UK tour of film makers documenting low carbon initiatives in a big, blue zero-carbon bus. The government-funded Zero Carbon Tour stopped by to feature the successful partnership between BCE and James Cropper PLC, which has seen a range of solar PV arrays installed at the firm's plant. New scheme boosts fruit and vegetable growing in Cumbria

Cumbrian farmers have dedicated acres of land to growing fruit and vegetables this year, thanks to support from a new initiative, Home Grown Here. The scheme will see a tasty range of fresh produce grown in the county, from peas and potatoes to apples to rhubarb. Fresh from the fields, it will all be enjoyed by Cumbrians and visitors through local retailers, cafés, restaurants, hotels, farm shops and veg box schemes. Huge funding boost for PLACE project

We at CAfS are delighted to announce that a project in which we are a partner has received a huge boost of funding this week. The PLACE project is being run by Cumbria Development Education Centre and they have just been awarded a grant of £248,600. Climate training available for all County Council staff and Members

CAfS are delighted to be working in partnership with Cumbria County Council to deliver climate and carbon literacy training to 550 of their staff and elected members. All elected representatives, senior managers and extended leadership team are able to book a place on either a full day, accredited climate and carbon literacy training course, a 90 minute ‘Climate Science and Solutions for Cumbria’ overview or a 30 minute climate coffee break chat. Growing the sustainability network

On June 22nd representatives from the Cumbria Sustainability Network came together for a virtual discussion on how to take their work forward and build a strong community of groups and individuals working across the county to raise awareness of the climate emergency and to take practical action to reduce carbon emissions in their area. Tackling climate change in Cumbria gets £2.5 million National Lottery boost

Cumbria’s bid for £2.5 million of National Lottery funding to cut carbon emissions in the county has been successful, it was announced today.  CAfS is one of nearly 70 organisations from many walks of life in Cumbria that came together to submit the bid to the National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. The award to the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership will fund a five-year programme of action aiming to make Cumbria the first carbon-neutral county in the UK, in a way that benefits communities and is led by them.   “This is incredible news for Cumbria and we’re delighted to have developed this successful bid on behalf of the partnership!” said Karen Mitchell, chief executive of CAfS, which co-chairs the partnership. “The grant [...]
